I wrote a how-to article on making a very simple beginner-friendly a-line skirt ---> http://susanstars.com/howto/make_aline.php
It's also in the Get Crafty book! :)
I love sewing skirts, I just got some great fabric with horses on it that will be my next one.

Never forget Simplicity patterns -- when they go on sale for 99 cents at Joanns, they are a fabulous bargain. The styles are pretty fashion forward to, not really dowdy at all.

| I'm always telling people to find a copy of Patternless Fashions (out of print, but Powells.com and half.com often have it). You make patterns (despite the title, if you do it on paper you have a pattern) based on your own measurements, so stuff fits like a dream. |

| Thank You to susna*s. You gave the guts and knowledge to make my own and I have passed that along to many other young girls here. |

I just made this one over the weekend! It was pretty easy. It takes a little less than 2 yards of fabric, plus a little bit of interfacing, a 7" zipper, and one hook and eye. Of course, you could improvise in a million ways with an angled hem, rick-rack, pockets, a button at the waist...
The pattern is New Look 6353 and if it's not quite long enough for you it would be super easy to make it longer. The finished size is 21" on this pattern, and I'm tall... |

Here's the tutorial for the wrap skirts. Let me know if you have any questions. This pattern is an exact copy of an original '70's wrap skirt. I've made about 50 of these now. It's super easy. I like to pin the flaps down with a safety pin to protect my private parts.

violi, that is a great tutorial! thanks for posting it, now I can relive my teenagery wrap skirt days. fun!
also thanks susan*s for the a-line skirt tute (which I know I have printed out somewhere, but I forgot about until now) and meexie for the book rec! I can't believe I waited til now to check out this thread. it's so hard to find cute skirts that fit; I should have learned how to make them myself long ago. this weekend will see me hunched over my tiny sewing machine trying to figure this sewing thing out for good. :) |
