This is a scan of a 35 mm slide. In the winter of 2003, 4 friends and I set out to ski about 70 miles of the great divide route across the icefields of the Canadian Rockies. Along the way we enjoyed (suffered through?) many adventures including a rappel down an icy cliff face in 100 mph winds onto a dangerous avalanche slope, a ski across the thin ice of a thawing lake, and some of the most incredible powder skiing of my life down the face of Mons peak. This image of an ice cavern at the base of the Mons icefield seems to encapsulate the beauty, remoteness and danger I felt on that incredible adventure. People enjoying nature. Canadian Style!

That is just spectacular...never seen anything like it. I like the point of light and the drift coming into it, as well as the blue hues that dominate the frame!

Spectacular color, Mike! It does look like a scene from a sci fi movie. Was this photo taken on Krypton?

Bill,
This is the underground outflow tract for water flowing underneath the glacier in summer. Of course it is frozen solid in March, allowing us to climb in under the glacier. The continual erosive force of the water has thinned the roof and caused it to collapse where my friends are standing. The winter snow is drifting in through the hole creating that cone of snow. The light is coming down through the hole onto the cone of snow. The light is diffused in the raging snowstorm above us so the light isn't overpowering the dark shadows under the glacier. The light on the ice above the snow cone is a fill flash from my camera. Thanks for looking!

An amazing shot Mike, perfectly captured. It has a definite 'other-worldly' feel to it, which I guess is pretty accurate in some ways. Thanks for sharing this - this is about has close to seeing this as this Florida boy will probably ever come.

Hi Mike,
This should not only be the WC winner, it should be on NPN's next month cover. A truly unique and incredible image.

This has to be one of the most unique and facsination images I've ever seen in my life. I can't believe I missed it the first time. I'll bet you could write a book just on the journey to get here! This is truly a scene that only a handful of people that have ever lived are lucky enough to see and you've captured it magnficently well. Reminds me somewhat of Art Wolfe's 'Edge of the Earth corner of the Sky' body of work. A truly otherworldly location photographed with a creative eye.

Photography isn't dead in today's digital age. The only thing that is dead is the assertion that it is not a true art form. Many great photographers have known this all along.
