What is MMA?

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a combat sport in which a wide variety of fighting techniques are used. If you took all Muay Thai kickboxing, Greco and Freestyle Wrestling, Judo, No Gi Submission Grappling and other forms of martial art, threw them all together and that is what MMA would be.

There is no single strongest fighting style. The best way to become stronger in MMA fighting is by combining different fighting styles such as jui jitsu with muy thai. Those two make the most best combination.

Wrestling

Wrestling is a form of fighting, both playfully and as a sport, between two opponents without weapons who grab each other's body and/or clothing ( grappling, as opposed to punching, striking, kicking and pinching).

Greco Roman Wrestling

Greco focuses on upper body take downs and throws, which are much harder to defend. The average MMA fighter trains freestyle or folkstyle, and basis their takedown defense off that. Meaning 90 percent of their take down defense is a good sprawl. However Greco trains for upper body clinch work, and throws from there, making 90 percent of take down defense limited.

Freestyle Wrestling

Freestyle wrestling is an Olympic event. Under international rules any fair hold, trip, or throw is permitted. Are forbidden, as well as kicking, punching, butting with the head, and holding the costume. Wrestlers are cautioned for irregularities, and three cautions mean disqualification. The bout is supervised by a referee on the mat, a mat chairman, a judge, and a timekeeper. A fall is awarded when one contestant holds both of his opponent's shoulders to the mat for one second.

Freestyle wrestling appeared in the 1904 olympic games. The first world championship took place in Helsinki, in 1951.

Ju Jitsu and Brazilian JiuJitsu

Ju Jitsu is the ancient martial art that was modified by Jigoro Kano in the late 19th century to become Judo. It was the ancient unarmed combat techniques used by the samurai.

Brazilian or Gracie JiuJitsu is a modern martial art that is essentially a form of Judo that focuses primarily on the matwork component of Judo. It was developed by the Gracie family after they learned Judo from a Judo master from Japan.

Jeet Kune Do

Jeet Kune Do refers to the martial arts system that Bruce Lee founded. Its literal translation is "Way of the Intercepting Fist". Jeet Kune Do is more of a philosophy, to use any techniques that are effective and to discard what is useless. You could say it's the genesis of modern MMA.

Kenpo

Kenpo, literally meaning "fist principles" or "fist method," is is a term used to refer to a wide variety of martial arts, and is sometimes used as a blanket term for martial arts in general, especially in East Asia.

Muay Thai Kickboxing

Muay Thai is Thai Boxing. You can strike with fist, elbows, knees, and feet. Muay Thai involves lots of clinch-work then using the knees to get them in the torso or abdomen.

Judo

Judo contains the best throws of any of the martial arts, the best sweeps and takedowns, and has superior takedown defense. Judo also has the best groundwork of any martial art, with the exception of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which has a larger variety of submissions. Judo has pinning techniques that are better than those of other wrestling forms, all of which were excluded when Judo and Jujutsu were used to make BJJ. Judo has the best chokes, both gi and no-gi, and the largest variety of armbars. It should also be noted that, while some other joint locks are prohibited in competition, these locks (spinal, leg, wrist, ankle, and compression locks) are still taught. Judo is also the only grappling art that is suitable for street fighting and self-defense, as wrestling cannot be taught for this.

Kung Fu Grappling

Grappling in Kung Fu seems different than what people are becoming accustomed to seeing in BJJ. In Kung Fu and other Traditional disciplines, any "grab" that you employ, even while while standing, can be considered grappling. In Hapkido, when a person blocked or parried a punch and seized control of an arm, and executed a simulated arm break, a wristlock, foot sweep throw or takedown, it is considered grappling. Whatever form of Kung Fu you might practice includes those sort of moves. The competent instructor will teach you how, and in what instances they can be applied.
