Dan Senor: Condoleezza Rice Is Pursuing the VP Spot
April 06, 2008 11:48 AM
ABC News' Mary Bruce Reports: Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is actively courting the vice presidential nomination, Republican strategist Dan Senor said.
“Condi Rice has been actively, actually in recent weeks, campaigning for this,” Senor said this morning on “This Week with George Stephanopoulos.”
According to Senor, Rice has been cozying up to the Republican elite.
“There's this ritual in Washington: The Americans for Tax Reform, which is headed by Grover Norquist, he holds a weekly meeting of conservative leaders -- about 100, 150 people, sort of inside, chattering, class types,” Senor said. “They all typically get briefings from political conservative leaders. Ten days ago, they had an interesting visit -- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice -- the first time a secretary of state has visited the Wednesday meeting.”
Senor explained that Rice’s history in public office would make her a prime candidate, especially in light of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain’s emphasis on experience throughout his campaign.
“What the McCain campaign has to consider is whether or not they want to pick a total outsider, a fresh face, someone a lot younger than him, a governor who people aren't that familiar with," Senor said. "The challenge they're realizing is that they'll have to have to spend 30 to 45 days, which they won't have at that point, educating the American public about who this person is.
“The other category is someone who people instantly say, the second they see that announcement, 'I get it, that person could be president tomorrow,'" Senor added. "Condi Rice is an option.”

On guns she is GREAT.
On Arabs, she is horrible. She continues to want to reward the Arabs in Gaza and West Bank with statehood, even though they have never ceased their rocket and terrorist attacks on Israel. Like Clinton, W, and Cheney, she is beholden to Arab money.
In addition, is it a good idea for McCain to tie himself to W's administration? I doubt it. Even conservatives don't want a Bush III administration. If the Dems weren't so bad, I'd probably sit our this election.
For background, I'm a conservative from Georgia.

Not too sure on this... But it would be a great contrast. Self-made Condi versus the Jeremiah Wright G Damn America Victimhood campaign.
It would also drive the liberals insane. The first black VP. The first female VP. A twofer.
Posted by: Jeffq | Apr 6, 2008 12:20:06 PM
She needs executive experience before being considered.
Posted by: Ken | Apr 6, 2008 12:25:26 PM
I don't think Condi would attract much if any of the black vote. She doesn't feel enough of their pain and she doesn't (I don't think) understand the victimhood issue. Also she is identified with Bush and that means the libs would just trash her.

Alright, Condi ... go for it.
I am for whatever it takes to help MCCAIN win in November ....
I am the 28% of Hillary supporters who want MCCAIN to win in November.
Whatever it takes, Condi ... whatever it takes ...
The Presidency is so important to us ... We love the good U. S. A
If Obama is the Democratic nominee, Republicans NEED to win the White House.
I dont think a MCCAIN/LIEBERMAN or a MCCAIN/ROMNEY ticket will do it.
Obama talks too well and worms himself in to the young and vulnerable.
It is the young that is so taken in ..
The young are naive, impressionable and idealistic.
Posted by: WayToGo | Apr 6, 2008 12:42:13 PM
She is too tied to Bush to be a great VP choice for McCain. If I were McCain I would say no thanks.
Posted by: Maritza | Apr 6, 2008 1:00:20 PM
DaveD, to say that Condi doesn't understand the black experience betrays an ignorance concerning her personal history. She grew up in segregated Alabama, and lost four of her childhood playmates in the Birmingham church bombing.
She certainly was exposed to much more of the Rev. Wright type African American experience growing up than Obama ever was being raised by a white parent and going to school in Hawaii. And her childhood experience does not seem to have done to her what it did to Rev. Wright; it just influenced her to strive harder to excell, which she did.
Posted by: Salamantis | Apr 6, 2008 1:06:01 PM
Just what McCain doesn't need--more evidence that electing him would only mean a third Bush term. Good grief! Everything that Condi and Bush have done regarding foreign policy has been a disaster. Why in the world, with all the other better options, would McCain want to go with her?? Democrats would love the opportunity to further pair McCain and the Bush team.
Posted by: Tom Zirpoli | Apr 6, 2008 1:16:42 PM
One has to remember that she replaced Colin Powell because he used some common sense.
She on the other hand is just a mouth piece for George Bush and his failed policies.
Posted by: Thinking | Apr 6, 2008 1:30:00 PM
I think McCain would do better to ask Colin Powell to be VP. I would vote for Colin if he was running for president. Sorry Obama, your just not vetted enough and what I've seen doesn't impress me at all.
Posted by: Bon53 | Apr 6, 2008 1:31:44 PM
DaveD,
The young are impressionable - are you kidding me? It is the old who vote a straight party line and voted for George Bush - Twice.

"All I remember of Ms. Condoleeza is Katrina. This witch was shopping and seeing overhyped musicals. I blame her parents, who shielded her from the horrors of the Civils Rights movement. Not once did she think of halting her holiday to address this disaster. Screw her." I have seen this type of comment numerous times... I am still baffled by what the Secretary of State ( The Foreign Minister )..would have to do with Hurricane Katrina.
I had the good fortune of listening in person to a talk Secretary Rice gave for 30 minutes without one note, one um, huh, and or other filler word. She can command attention in a room with her oratory and her story is a stark contrast to that of the Privileged upbringing of Barack Obama.
Posted by: Doug | Apr 6, 2008 1:57:52 PM
I like Rice. She is another brave woman. I will for sure support her. Colin Powell is another good choice as McCain's vice president.
I would have considered Obama, but his pastor's hateful talks made me totally disgusted about ever voting for Obama. Obama should have at least protested or done something to his pastor within the past 20 years, but I assume he never ever tried.
I am one of Hillary's supporters who will vote for McCain in Nov. However, McCain needs to show us his ability in Economy and other social developmental issues. Or at a minimum, some of his economic advisers would have the ability to make our lives better.
Meanwhile, I reserve my right to still vote for Clintons.
Posted by: yi001 | Apr 6, 2008 2:04:00 PM
Condi Rice? You must be joking!
She is a disgrace. Not only is she an apologist for the misguided U.S. foreign policy but has been personally responible for the senseless waste of many American and Arab lives.
Posted by: Don | Apr 6, 2008 2:10:23 PM
great idea..can't wait to have a third bush term
Posted by: Jerry | Apr 6, 2008 2:22:18 PM
How shallow are we? Do I tihnk Obama is a racist. No, I do, however, question his judgement. Look at his chice of associations which include a well known socialist, a crooked investor, a husband a wife team who actually decleared war on America and still show no remorse. Obama has chosen to bring his daughters, his litle punishments, into a church where hate was spewed and never stood against those words of hate. Give me Colin Powell or Condi Rice. Sure Condi isn't perfect but she at least has a clue. Barak has no judgement and I fear no true love of America as we know it. He is too close to socialism for my comfort.
Posted by: John | Apr 6, 2008 2:23:45 PM
This would be the very best good news for the Democrats. She is tatally tied to the Bush's mess and not bring in a single vote from the African-American or women.
Posted by: Mark Webb | Apr 6, 2008 2:24:35 PM
I will consider voting for John McCain if Obama is on the democratic ticket. My other option would be not to vote at all. If Condi is on the Republican ticket with John McCain, I would definitely vote McCain/Rice.
Posted by: Sandy A | Apr 6, 2008 2:32:17 PM
WaytoGo and Sandy A, you want a 3rd term of WBush-Cheney-McCain go for it, as you may know Hill the Bosnian General is already a very good friend of McCain, so nobody will be surprised to see you and your losing candidate letting down the democrats for the Republicans with Cinderella or not on McCain's ticket. May be a McCain/Hill ticket will even be a better ticket for you. That is an super unstoppable ticket. God bless America and God bless Obama. OBAMA08.
Posted by: BKMC | Apr 6, 2008 2:46:38 PM
I thought she said in was not in her genes.I guess Bush told her she better do it. I thought McCain was an expert on foreign policy, why would he need the secretary of state to compliment him on the ticket? Isn't the VP pick suppose to compliment the nominee? I guess the republican party needs some color.
Posted by: merle7 | Apr 6, 2008 2:51:39 PM
Isn't she the one who said earlier "its not in my genes", when she was asked!
Has her genes changed now????
Why all these politicians do not stick on their words?
Posted by: Peace | Apr 6, 2008 2:52:34 PM
As a lifelong Republican, I and MANY of my conservative friends will leave the party if this kind of person is the VP nomination.
Thanks for spitting on us loyal Southerners, GOP.
Posted by: Jimbo | Apr 6, 2008 3:14:28 PM
This makes Condi look like a liar and it doesn't help that she carries the baggage of the much-hated Bush administration. Part of the baggage is that she and Dubya are way too liberal.
Just remember, Dubya's selling out the country to Mexico and China, etc and spending like a drunken Demo, and Condi's recent comment about Americans having a birth defect: racism. That may be true, (it's impossible to live in a racist society and not be racist), but she sounds like the Obamas now that she said that. The conservative base of the Repub party won't go for Condi, heck, they won't go for McCain!
Colin Powell is liberal too, but I'd say he's a much better pick if you gotta have color on the ticket. The problem is, he really doesn't want it, he means it and I believe him.
Posted by: Christie | Apr 6, 2008 3:28:04 PM
If McCain would just ask Colin Powell to be his V.P we would all be Happy. No matter what party we belong to.

Senator Obama has not been joined to the
body of Rev. Wright. Neither do I believe that he attended services each Sunday. Fox News' Hannity and Rush Limbaugh pulled this stunt to
allow Sen. McCain to move ahead. Three sound bites do not make Rev. Wright a bigot. Why didn't they publish all the
other good sermons about Jesus and God? Because it was not in their interests to
do so.
Posted by: Plainspeaking | Apr 6, 2008 4:29:10 PM
Rice would be a horrrible mistake. She is a terrible Secretary of State. She knows nothing on how to handle the arabs. So, she is educated. We need someone like Romney in there.
Posted by: Todd | Apr 6, 2008 6:03:35 PM
Ken:
Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and
John McCain lack executive experience!
Condi would be a great choice in my
opinion and a great president down the road!
Posted by: reaganfan | Apr 6, 2008 6:24:03 PM
I don't like McCain, but having Condi has his running mate would most certainly score the 2 votes that come with my household.
Posted by: Pete | Apr 6, 2008 6:34:13 PM
She's a pro-abort. They will not get my vote.
Posted by: Ruthie | Apr 6, 2008 6:34:58 PM
Personally I would be excited to see condi as a running mate. She would prove to be an excellent foil to either Hillary or Obama. If anything, she's much more qualified than either of them to be President.
Posted by: Paul | Apr 6, 2008 6:36:59 PM
Fantastic VP. I am all for it!
Posted by: Lloyd | Apr 6, 2008 6:39:15 PM
For McCain to be successful he must address his shortcomings with economic policy. While I like Rice and agree with her on many points, Romney would be a much stronger addition to the ticket.
Posted by: Brent Williams | Apr 6, 2008 6:40:34 PM
I believe she would do just fine. She would take direction and follow through with enthusiasm on whatever direction or mission McCain requested.
Posted by: Dave | Apr 6, 2008 6:40:48 PM
ABSOLUTELY!! Condi is the ONE potential VP that would bring me confidently to McCain's column on the ballot - the best (possible) news I've heard today.
Posted by: Missourimule | Apr 6, 2008 6:41:04 PM
I like McCain and this pick would hurt him. Condi is not remotely qualified. McCain has done a good job of subtly distancing himself from the failed W. foreign policy of unilateralism. He'll finish reasonably what was wrongly started in Iraq, however will also work to re-establish American credibility with allies. Condi's foreign policy ideas have been bad and she basically was a yes-person for W. A lot of terrible decisions were made on her watch. I think this would be a very bad choice for McCain.
Posted by: Peter | Apr 6, 2008 6:41:18 PM
Now there's a veep choice that I can go for. She is strong willed and probably about as close as you can get to an honest political candidate. it's also a chance for conservatives and republicans alike to show it's not blacks we dislike....it's democrats....black, white or polka-dotted.
Posted by: Hkinsey | Apr 6, 2008 6:41:54 PM
Rice is many times over a better orator then Obama and she appears to love this country with her patriotism.I still can't believe people are putting down Bush for taking out Hussein. How much more evidence do we need comparing Sadam with a modern day Hitler. People are totally stupid if they don't see the aftermath of Sadam's mass destruction of people in Iraq. Perhaps a non believer needs to get a shovel and start digging in the huge amount of mass graves still appearing in Iraq.
Posted by: scott | Apr 6, 2008 6:43:38 PM
She would be an outstanding choice. To have so many libs posting, just goes to show what a threat she would be. It would certainly take the first woman, first black out of the dems sails.
She is a brillaint woman with more experience than obama and clinton combined. I would actually forgive McCain the Boeing/Northup EADS disaster, if he chose her.
Posted by: Tina | Apr 6, 2008 6:44:14 PM
She is not pro-choice. She is against federal funding for abortion. This is a perfectly reasonable position because ultimately as Americans, everyone has the freedom to believe and do what they choose. Personally, I am against abortion, but if someone else wants to have one, they can feel free as long as my money does not pay for it. Any of the democratic choices are pro-choice and will use federal funds for abortion, so it is very silly to say that you would not vote republican because you think that condi is pro-choice. I think she is a very smart woman, much smarter than McCain, and would be an excellent choice for VP.
Posted by: Allison | Apr 6, 2008 6:44:15 PM
Oh, by the way, the minute Obama came out for a Federal Law against Concealed Carry, I knew that the odds of a Rice VP nomination went waaaaaaaaay up.
Obama the Gun Grabber. Obama the Enemy of our 2nd Amendment Rights.
Condi: the 2nd Amendment Absolutist.
Learn it, Love it, Live it!
Posted by: section9 | Apr 6, 2008 6:45:29 PM
I think Condi would be great. It would drive the libs insane and she would attract a certain number of blacks. She is also a great role model for all young people - study hard and excel in what you do and the world is yours.
She is also a good example of having good parents who care about how their kids turn out.

I LOVE IT! What better way to tally up all the progressive liberal self-congratulations on African-American and female candidates than an African-American woman- with a Ph.D. Rice is a genuis- a classical pianist, speaks several languages, and is competent enough with football to have been considered for NFL commissioner- all of this besides being the world's most powerful woman. Even Madeline Albright's famous professor father (who taught them both declared to his daughter that Condi was the best student he had ever experienced. I was on the fence but her inclusion would lend me to vote for McCain (who is really a Democrat in GOP skins).

Go Condi!!!!!!
Posted by: David | Apr 6, 2008 6:50:27 PM
Obama is a racist man pure and simple and married to a racist hag who only obtained her degree and position in society due to affirmative action and guilt-laden, liberal, white wanks with lubed-up flat butts. Obama is a racist fool with connections to Luis Farrakan, The Black Panthers and any other organizations for blacks even tho he is a half white who was abandoned by his good old afrikan daddy who bailed on him when he was a "little children". Hussein Obama is a racist man pure and simple.
Posted by: Joe | Apr 6, 2008 6:51:03 PM
What is the most fun of reading these posts is seeing the libs twisting into contortions over the possibility of Condaleezza being tapped for VP.
Because they know with her on the ticket it's a dagger in the heart of their train wreck of a campaign. So pay no attention when they whine about hurricane Katrina or her lack of executive experience (what kind of executive experience has Barrack had for God's sake). They are just scared that she might wind up on the ticket. It's their worst nightmare and I hope John McCain has the good sense to see it.
Posted by: Zipperhead | Apr 6, 2008 6:51:10 PM
She is smart, works hard and seasoned.
Not a bad choice at all - with one fell swoop the female and black vote on the left is compromised.
Posted by: Robert NYC | Apr 6, 2008 6:51:25 PM
Wow. King Georges yes (wo)man wants the VP job. I don't think she has ever had an opinion of her own, has she? The thought is frightening.
Posted by: Dominic | Apr 6, 2008 6:51:29 PM
Racial histories aside, Obama is a racist. I have read his books. His pandering to whites is exactly that. Pandering. meanwhile a woman who made herself without much help and went on to become a PhD and leader in education has gone on to great heights without the likes of Wright's help. On her getting the nomination, no, she won't. I would prefer Michael Steele or JC Watts. Both certified conservatives.

Condiscending Rice? Even for a McCaniac that would be hard to swallow. No thanks. Hopefully McCain has more sense!
Posted by: slw | Apr 6, 2008 6:51:47 PM
I'm one of those former Obama supporters that left after learning he and his pastor (Wright) were anti-white racists.
I support Hillary, but if Obama is nominated you can count me in that 28% that will vote for McCain.
I think Condi rice is a terrific choice, and I would welcome it.
Posted by: Rick | Apr 6, 2008 6:52:31 PM
It would be self-defeating if the GOP did this. What's even sadder is McCain is running for a "third term of Bush". And the saddest would be that he'll probably get elected somehow even though Bush/Rice have managed to jack up our country on a local, national, and global scale.
Posted by: Alex | Apr 6, 2008 6:52:41 PM
Re: Condi as secretary of state - She might not have been perfect, but she sure pulled a coup last week with NATO's backing of the missile shield. I'm torn with this one.I like her, but the Dems would be more able to tie McCain/Rice to the Bush Administration. Of course, seeing their head explode with the news might be fun. Plus, I'm not sure the Bush third term accusation would be all that effective. After all, who are the people who will respond to that claim? Aren't they the sort of people that would vote Dem anyway?
Posted by: PinnyPed | Apr 6, 2008 6:53:03 PM
Condi might not attract African American votes, but she would be like a giant highlighter pointing up the hypocrisy of the leftists.
They're not really interested in diversity at all.
Posted by: John Mullins | Apr 6, 2008 6:53:05 PM
I would be very favorable to a Rice VP slot. I have more confidence in her abilities than I do any of the other candidates running combined! I am really NOT excited about McCain at this point but I don't believe I could stomach either of teh other two.
Posted by: Rugu8961 | Apr 6, 2008 6:53:12 PM
This cannot happen. It will not fit into the stereotype that all Conservatives are closet racist. It can only matter if Democrats put forth a women or an African-American for president. I can still use the term African-American, right???

OK. I'm conservative. Predominantly Constitutionalist. Registered Republican all my life. Avid Second Amendment supporter. Supporter of the effort in Iraq (No cut and run here)
Having said that I'm also a long time fan of Condoleezza Rice and it would do my heart good from what I know of her at this point for her to become the Vice President and possibly President later on after seeing how she does. I'm also Justice Clarence Thomas biggest fan. OH! And did I mention that I'm white? It's true.

The borders need to be sealed with arm guards- the American people list immigration as high on the fix list. Nobody listens but Ron Paul. The MSM will make their little racists remarks about picking an African-American to counter Obama, but she's an obvious choice, no matter who were to run against the GOP this year.

All this time I have been thinking that the Clinton campaign is enabling the great Democratic feat of snatching defeat from the very jaws of victory. Why would McCain do the same for the Republicans? Rice as VP would be a disaster for his campaign- and I admit want him to lose anyway. The fact that she is Africa-American would not help, since most African-Americans in the general election will vote Democratic even if Clinton is the nominee. The fact that she is female is not going to help, even if the nominee is Obama, since Democratic women will not vote for a ticket that is lead by a pro-war and anti-choice old white man (but not typical). That would only leave her charm and interpersonal skills, which are only marginally better than Darth Cheney.

And..
The Liberals are scared to death of her. Expect much obfuscating.

Bush is an idiot ? 2 MBA's ? Even if his Daddy bought him one from his alma mater, how the hell did he get the other ? How many MBA's does your boy Clinton have? Zero.
Rice a Bush lackey ? You don't know the State Dept. do you ... Grow up, you liberal imbeciles. Do some fact checking before you smear someone. Oh, and learn how to spell, Obama sucking morons.

I'm very worried about this.
If it's McCain/Rice vs. Obama, all the disaffected Hillary supporters will DEFINITELY flock to McCain to support the first female VP/very likely first female president.
if it's McCain/Rice vs. Clinton, all the disaffected African American Obama supporters will flock to McCain to support the first black VP.
Not good at all!!! I was hoping McCain would pick Pawletney or Christ or someone else forgettable.

The ideal ticket would be Romney + Rice! Why can't we ask our delegates to get our party back that the libs and independents hijacked and nominate Mitt?

Condi Rice would be welcomed by southerners. She's from a good christian family (her father is a minister) in Alabama, and they are not racist like Jeremiah Wright and Barack Obama.
She's very conservative, which would balance the ticket, and she would take just enough votes from Obama among blacks, and pick up a sizeable chunk of the female vote.
Since Obama needs BOTH of those demographics to go for him in HUGE blocks (A-A's by 90%+ and females by at least 60%--to balance the large white male vote McCain will get), she is sure to pull 15-25% black, and 52-56% female.
If she can pull those numbers off, say hello to President McCain.
Not to mention she has more executive and diplomatic experience than the democrats presidential pick of either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.

I'm going to be writing in Ron Paul. They will see how many votes they lost. McCain is an insult to us. Why would Politically Correct pandering with someone like Rice help?

Condaleeza Rice commands instant respect as a person from most Americans. She does well in the polls as by far the most popular member of the Bush Administration; approval ratings well into the 60s. She is undeniably brilliant, and a well balanced achiever.
There's a lot of "fill in the blanks" on her regarding her personal positions on 2nd Amendment rights, abortion, etc. Certainly she is soft on Israel -- but McCain is not. Unless something very bad shows up on her issues I'd love to see her on the ticket. She's certainly no more liberal than McCain who I will have to hold my nose to vote for this November. Couldn't find a more qualified person for the job than Rice imo.

She's a remarkable person, perfect for the VP nomination, and I'd be 100% excited to go door-to-door for her. However, the mainstream media has trashed her, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld pretty successfully over the last 7 years. So McCain might lose moderate votes, just because of the god-damned MSM a
