If you are a caregiver or live with some who is mobility challenged, then it is your responsibility to ensure that they are safe. A fall, especially in older individuals who may have weaker bones, can result in serious injury. In fact, in America, falls down the stairs are a major cause of broken bones and even death.
Those who have stairs in their home have a responsibility to the people that share their home to ensure that they can safely use the steps. This can be achieved installing a stair lift. Stair lifts are used to safely transport people up and down the steps. A small platform called a perch is sometimes used for people who have joint problems that prohibit them from sitting easily, but more frequently a chair is lifted along the distance of the steps.
Most units support around 300 pounds, but there are several heavy duty stair lifts available that can be used which support much more weight. These heavy duty stair lifts also tend to have wider seats and are specially reinforced.
When you are providing care in your home for someone who is mobility challenged, there is no excuse not to have a stair lift. This way you can leave knowing your loved one is in good hands and can still access all parts of the house.
