Growing garlic begins with good soil which prevents many problems. It enables roots to growquickly and vigorously. You can't have healthy plant without well developed roots. Healthy garlic resist disease and insect attack and obviously produce more. Your soil should have good drainage and have lots of organic matter and nutrients.
Garlic loves full sun and is a heavy drinker, so you should water it regularly to prevent stress. You should have an irrigation in place to avoid drying out of garlic for too long . We stop watering completely around the end of May, when it's approximately one month before harvesting. This is when the plant stops feeding the leaves and concentrates on developing bulb. When growing garlic you have to remember the greatest amount of growth in the bulb occurs during the last month.
The best time to fall garlic is 3-4 weeks before freeze-up. You will get substantial root growth before winter and then 3-4 months dormancy that will give your garlic a head-start in the spring.
Garlic is ready to harvest when the plant is half to three quarters yellow. Leaf tips begin to dry, discolor and bend and top growth begins to die down. Bottom third of the lower leaves may also be brown. That's the best time to get garlic out of the ground and enjoy your reward for growing garlic.
