Anyone know of a link or other resource that can help me to understand the way that women speak Japanese? Most of my native friends who speak decent english deny that there's enough of a difference to create a communication problem. But my Japanese is still really basic and the differences in syntax and particle usage, for example, are throwing me for a loop. I done googled it and I can't find much.
And what does "muri shinai de de" mean? It's in the context of a beginning relationship where the lady was expressing concern for me cause she hadn't seen me for a few days. |

The last first, "muri shinai de ne" means "don't push yourself too hard", in other words, "take care of yourself", "take it easy"..... Now, as for Wimmins' Japanese, there are no differences in syntax, period. The main diference is in final particle usgae and politeness levels, and also the use of euphemisms and or vague expressions. As for the particles, Wa at the end of the sentence is, for your purposes, at your level, a wimins' word. Don't use it; it sounds goofy coming from a man (there is a male final emphatic "wa",as in "Atsui wa (Feck it's hot)" but don't worry about that for now) Women tend to say "So yo" in agreement. You should be saying "So da yo". Women use Ne more than men. At any rate, don't get your bum in a knot over those type of words; they are not crucial in strict semantic terms; they tend to modify and express emotion and attitude, or soften the previous statement, which is as much a cultural inclination as a strict linguistic issue. Good Luck, man.

OP, it would be a good idea to pay some extra attention to your languge studies if you find yourself hanging around the majority of the time with people of the opposite gender. Most of the differences between male and female Japanese are slight, but if you are not careful you might end up sounding a bit.....er....light in the loafers.

We've established that Kyoto women have great voices, not great taste in men. Just taking the piss Kurogane, you have to admit you left yourself open for that one. |
